Washington Post: Drugmakers Ease Eligibility for Discounts (repost from RSDS.org)

Drugmakers Ease Eligibility for Discounts
By Francesca Lunzer Kritz

Washington Post

In this tough economy, a few drug companies are broadening their programs
that help people struggling to pay for prescription drugs.

--
Last month, Merck, whose drugs include Januvia for diabetes and
Singulair for asthma, increased the income eligibility of its
assistance plan to 400 percent of the federal poverty level, from its
previous 200 percent level.

This
means that patients in the contiguous United States qualify if they
have an annual household income of $43,320 or less for individuals,
$58,280 or less for couples, or $88,200 or less for a family of four,
even if the financial situation is temporary.

--
Abbott launched a program to help pay for its injectable autoimmune
disease drug, Humira. Even many people with insurance coverage will not
have to pay more than about $5 per month for the drug, according to the
company.

--
Together Rx Access recently eased the income rules for its discount
drug card. Eligibility now starts at $45,000 a year for a single person
(up from $30,000) and runs up to $105,000 for a family of five (up from
$70,000).

The
free card, whose sponsors include Pfizer and Novartis, is designed to
benefit legal U.S. residents without public or private prescription
coverage who don't qualify for Medicare. Discounts on more than 300
drugs average 25 to 40 percent, according to Christopher Loder, a
spokesman for Pfizer.

--
Rx Outreach has added more than 100 drugs to the nearly 300 generics
that it will provide for anyone with a U.S. address whose income is no
greater than 300 percent of the federal poverty level. (That's $32,490
for an individual, $66,150 for a family of four.)

Jeff
Trewhitt, a spokesman for the pharmaceutical trade association PhRMA,
says that because companies are reevaluating their programs, it is
worth checking your eligibility even if your income level kept you from
getting assistance previously.

For
information on all drug company assistance programs, as well as some
offered by patient organizations such as the Arthritis Foundation,
check these two clearinghouses:

RxAssist (http://www.rxassist.org
or 401-729-3284), which is sponsored by several organizations,
including drug companies, and the Partnership for Prescription
Assistance (
http://www.pparx.org or 888-477-2669), which is sponsored by PhRMA. Both list many of the same programs.

Petition for RSD Awareness Day

Healthcommunities.com, publisher of neurologychannel is hosting a petition to raise awareness for RSD and advocate for a Nationally Recognized Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) Awareness Day.

Goal

Create a National Health Observance Day to raise public awareness for the millions of people and their loved ones who are affected by RSD.

Description

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is a chronic, painful, and progressive neurological condition that affects skin, muscles, joints, and bones. The syndrome usually develops in an injured limb, such as a broken leg, or following surgery. However, many cases of RSD ... << MORE >>

Bone Scans and other Visual Signs of RSD

A question recently came up about Bone Scans and if they can "prove" you have RSD/CRPS. The honest answer is not always and not with every person - It's basically just like any and all other tests with RSD - the ONLY proven factor is PAIN. Sucks doesn't it?

Here are some links I have found about bone scans.

Now other visual signs. Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) is a totally
non-invasive clinical imaging procedure for detecting and monitoring a
number of diseases and physical injuries, by showing the thermal
abnormalities present in ... << MORE >>

Caregivers and websites for Caregivers

Where would you be without your Caregiver? I would be lost, homeless, and possibly even dead. RSD plays such havoc on us and our lives that without the people who support us and take care of us we would be in a "not so nice place." However, upon speaking with new RSD sufferers and their caregivers I realized that there aren't enough options out there for Caregivers. So I am calling on everyone who reads my blog:

WHERE DO THE CAREGIVER'S GO? Please post in the comments if you have links to sites that offer an outlet for Caregiver's. I am ... << MORE >>

Dressed up like a big scary man

So tonight is a bad pain night. I am noticing a pattern. If I sit for
any length of time in my chair in the living room and play on the
computer I tend to hurt very badly right after and the next day. I am
not looking forward to tomorrow.

Well on top of sleep problems all of a sudden I hear something shaking
or hitting the side of our house. My dog, Bruiser, flips out. He's
getting ansy and starts feeding off me. I am fearful at this point but
must remain logical.

I check out the window, nothing. I stand in my hallway, noise, ... << MORE >>
